Standard 6

Standard 6: Demonstrates competence in classroom management.

a. Creates a learning community that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-regulation for every student.
Description of Artifact: Evaluation
Data Source: Associate Principal
Interpretation: As evidenced in the evaluation written by my associate principal, I work to create a learning community that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-regulation for every student. Notes are made regarding my competency skills in the area of establishing expectations and encouraging self-regulation for the students. In addition, he commented on the way I reviewed past concepts/incentives with the students and how I actively engaged the students in the book I was reading through providing them the opportunity to practice the new skill.

b. Establishes, communicates, models and maintains standards of responsible student behavior.
Description of Artifact: Student choice card
Data Source: Counselor
Interpretation: This choice card indicates how I have communicated and modeled responsible student behavior for a particular 1st grade student. When this student chooses one of his calm down choices in the classroom (versus getting aggressive or verbally insulting his teacher/peers), he earns one of his reward choices.

c. Develops and implements classroom procedures and routines that support high expectations for learning.
Description of Artifact: Guidance Expectations/Clip Chart
Data Source: Counselor
Interpretation: When I am teaching a guidance lesson, students are expected to abide by my guidance expectations. These expectations are explained and taught at the beginning of the school year. My guidance expectations, as well as the behaviors outlined by our Clip It! behavior chart, are "tracked" during class on my Guidance Clip Chart and recorded each class session on the guidance clip chart behavior log. I carry the clip chart with me EVERY time I come to the classroom - a routine/procedure I have done since the 1st day of school - and the behavior expectations are reviewed often with every class.

d. Uses instructional time effectively to maximize student achievement.
Description of Artifact: Evaluation
Data Source: Associate Principal
Interpretation: Several times in my evaluation, my associate principal indicated how I manage instructional time effectively. I moved students to the carpet quickly at the beginning of class and gave them several opportunities to "see" themselves as the character in the book. In addition, the rapport I have built with the students results in little trouble with classroom management, which can hinder a teacher’s ability to use instructional time effectively.

e. Creates a safe and purposeful learning environment.
Description of Artifact: My office
Data Source: Counselor
Interpretation: These photos of my office show how I work to create a safe and purposeful learning environment. My office is a colorful, non-threatening environment that encourages students to learn and work hard when meeting with me.
